Erodible soil fractions are usually dislodged from projections and trapped in depression. 可冲蚀土壤部分经常从凸出物剥蚀并降落于洼地。
About 300,000 farmers will be getting nearly $1.5 billion in federal payments for highly erodible cropland in the long-term Conservation Reserve Program, the Agriculture Department said Friday.
Under the program, farmers agree to take highly erodible cropland from production for 10 years.
Rather than taking the traditional, year-to-year approach, it envisions long-term idling of huge amounts of highly erodible land.
Under the massive Conservation Reserve Program, or CRP, a goal of up to 45 million acres of highly erodible cropland could be taken from production by the end of next year.
The government is losing more than $300 million a year because farmers are being paid too much to take highly erodible land out of production, congressional investigators reported Monday.
The Conservation Reserve Program pays farmers to take highly erodible acreage out of crop production for a decade.
The first column shows the estimated number of acres of highly erodible land, and the second is the percentage of acres for which plans have been completed.
"We are right on target, but I urge farmers to act now if they have highly erodible land that needs a conservation plan," he said.
The senators said that soil conservation also would be served by allowing enrollment of land that is not classified as highly erodible.
