An estimated 45 percent of the 850,000 eligible voters took part in the Allahabad election, state governemnt spokesman P.K. Asthana said.
The Allahabad district involved has 850,000 registered voters. Final results there were not expected before Saturday following allegations by Singh supporters o ballot-stuffing and intimidation of voters by the Congress Party.
A drop of nectar from the pot is thought to have fallen at Allahabad where the Ganges and Jamuna rivers come together.

Allahabad city officials have also stockpiled 10,000 tons of wheat, 4,000 tons of rice and 2,000 tons of sugar.

One of Singh's supporters was shot and injured in a clash in the village of Naini, 10 miles south of Allahabad, election authorities said.
