(a) Any one of various species of Old World singing birds of the family {Oriolid[ae]}. They are usually conspicuously colored with yellow and black. The European or golden oriole ({Oriolus galbula}, or {Oriolus oriolus}) has a very musical flutelike note. Another trans-Atlantic traveler, a northern oriole, arrived in the southwest English county of Cornwall Tuesday and an American robin has been spotted on the Isle of Wight, off the southern coast of England.
